OSCE OSCE Bishkek

22 - 23 May Conference on Oral History of Tajikistan Research.
The OSCE Academy has conducted throughout 2007 a large scale Oral History Project in Tajikistan in order to collect memories from all parts of the Tajik society focusing on the developments in Tajikistan since independence in 1991.The project aims to preserve popular memory of experiences and perceptions of the initial 15 years of independence of Tajikistan. In the transition from the former Soviet Union state into an independent republic, consolidating itself as a viable nation-state, Tajikistan has gone through a path full of challenges and achievements. Among these challenges and achievements one would count the process of gaining independence in 1991, the costly civil war of 1992-1997, the transformation of the economic structure of the country, the growth of a more pluralist, multi-party political spectrum, the overcoming of geopolitical challenges, and ultimately the establishment of a sustainable, viable state. During the research, an impressive number of interviews were recorded and analyzed.

The conference was a concluding event of this major project. Its goal was to publicize the outcomes of the research, but also to determine prospects for application and development of the research's findings.  Invited scholars from Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and countries of Europe contributed to discussions.
